Americans for Prosperity-Kansas applauds Senate Majority Leader’s proposed government efficiency bill Kansas Government Efficiency Commission would evaluate state programs, agencies

The Kansas Chapter of the grassroots group Americans for Prosperity congratulated the efforts of Sen. Derek Schmidt (R-Independence), to cut down on waste in state government.

AFP-Kansas State Director Alan Cobb thanked Sen. Schmidt for developing this ground-breaking legislation to increase efficiency and reduce waste, adding that Schmidt and his staff have worked very hard to ensure the commission would be truly independent.

“The Kansas Government Efficiency Commission overcomes a political hurdle that is a reality of our current budget process,” said Cobb. “It would require an up-or-down vote on the commission’s recommendations – without allowing any amendments – and would force some tough decisions when it comes to trimming the state budget.”

Similar to the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission, the proposed Kansas government commission would have the authority to review all aspects of state government and recommend the consolidation, downsizing or elimination of state-funded agencies, programs or positions.

“As Ronald Reagan once said, ‘the nearest thing to eternal life we will ever see on this earth is a government program,’ ” said Cobb. “Many suspect the state is spending money on things that are outdated or redundant and this commission would help lawmakers bring an end to some of these programs that are no longer necessary.

“Senator Schmidt deserves a great deal of credit for developing a proposal that certainly could become a model for state legislatures across the country.”
