ywca battered women task force accepts donation

Two local entities team up and donate a gift valued at over $6,000 to the YWCA Battered Women Task Force.

The donation, in the form of a vehicle, comes from the Black Women’s Network, Inc. and Doug Richert Pontiac Cadillac, Inc. of Topeka and will be delivered during the week of February 18.

“We chose the YWCA Battered Women Task Force as the recipient because of the great work they do in the Topeka community, especially for the safety women and children,” said Barbara Smith, chairperson of the Black Women’s Network, Inc.  “One of our group’s main objectives is to be a resource to community agencies and organizations, women and youth.”

The donated vehicle will be driven to transport the organization’s staff to outlying areas in providing services and support.  Studies have proven access to assistance is a key barrier for women in sexual or domestic violence situations in gaining assistance or seeking help.

“We is proud to support the women and children of the community,” said Doug Richert, owner of Doug Richert Pontiac Cadillac, Inc.  “We believe in the strong work of the YWCA Battered Women Task Force and want to provide this vehicle as a tool in making positive impact in the lives of those it serves.”

The vehicle’s make, model and year remain unnamed for the safety and privacy of those it serves in the community.

“While we normally do not accept vehicle donations, this gift came at a time when we had a need, and we are extremely grateful to the Black Women’s Network, Inc. and Doug Richert Pontiac Cadillac, Inc.,” said Eileen Doran YWCA Battered Women Task Force director.  “Our staff will be able to use it within the city and to travel to rural sites to serve those in need locally and beyond.”

The YWCA recently expanded rural services through a federally funded grant through the U.S. Department of Justice.  It opened a satellite offices in Jackson County in January 2008 and a Wabaunsee County will open later this month.  In these locations, all services provided in the Topeka location are available plus counseling and support for women and children.

The wish list for the Battered Women Task Force and the YWCA in general is ever-changing, and anyone interested in making a donation is encouraged to check its wish list located online.  Vehicle donations are accepted only in special circumstances.
