YWCA AMPS UP THE 2007 WEEK WITHOUT VIOLENCE
national event designed to raise awareness and tackle tough issues
Reaching victims and spreading awareness is the goal of the YWCA’s 2007 Week Without Violence.
The annual event, organized by the YWCA through its Battered Women Task Force, is requesting the community’s support through participation during the week’s activities.
“We were fortunate to have the backing of a very active committee, all of whom understand the importance of bringing domestic violence issues into the spotlight and raising awareness,” said Eileen Doran, the director for the YWCA Battered Women Task Force. “By coming out to the events and showing support of awareness and advocacy, our community, moves forward in our overall goal to help eradicate violent behaviors.”
The Week Without Violence officially begins October 14 and activities are planned throughout October 20. This year’s week kicks off on Sunday, Oct. 14 with the Reflection Vigil, where attendees are encouraged to reflect on the impact of domestic violence with members of Topeka’s faith community. The non-denominational vigil will honor survivors and remember victims at the Lake Shawnee botanical gardens from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Survivors will have a open opportunity to speak. Out of respect and privacy wishes for survivors, media is asked to come after the services are over at 6 pm.
On Monday, October 15, outdoor activities are planned for Jackson County residents at the Holton Square. The Night Out Against Crime event will be held from 5:50 p.m. to 7 p.m. and includes fun and games for the whole family along with a free hot dog dinner. Prizes for the Jackson County Week Without Violence t-shirt art contest will also be announced.
The following evening, on Tuesday, October 16, will be the second annual Chalk at the Capitol family from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the south side of the building. Games, face-painting and more are planned for this event and children can create a sidewalk chalk-drawing on non-violence. Winners for the 2007 Shawnee County Week Without Violence t-shirt art contest will also be announced.

On Wednesday will be the 12th annual March and Rally. Members of the Topeka community will unite to march for awareness. Participants gather at Bracken Park (across from the YWCA) and march together down Topeka Boulevard to the Heritage Hall while displaying signs of non-violence. Once participants arrive, they will enjoy a free lunch, community speakers discussing domestic violence and performances from local high school students. Sign interpretation will be provided as well as transportation to and from the rally for anyone who would like to utilize it.
On Thursday, October 18, a workshop for parents and youth workers will provide information on helping teens create healthy relationships. This free workshop will be at the Topeka and Shawnee County Public Library in Marvin Auditorium from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The week of activities is capped off on Saturday, October 20 with a special concert, Voices Against Violence featuring popular local bands as Saucy Jack and the Jen Say Kwahs at Jul’s Cocktail Club. The concert series begins at 7 pm and wraps up after midnight.
