LAST MINUTE FOLK CONCERT SERIES presents ~ ERIKA LUCKETT ~
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2007, 7:30 pm
Last Minute Folk Concert Series in Topeka continues its fall series “Women of Folk: the Songstress Series” featuring contemporary and world music folk singer songwriter ERIKA LUCKETT. Her unique sound is part blues, part funk, part Latin, part folk pop all residing in the global language of music transcending all borders.
Globally rooted ERIKA LUCKET pronounced “EDDIE-KAH” carves her personal story from a transcontinental upbringing. Born in Mexico with guitar propped against the cradle, Erika began exploring songwriting and music making during a unique childhood that zigzagged across the Venezuelan country sides, Brazilian rainforests, and South American metropolises. She stretched her imagination and musical palette during an adventurous teenage stint in Paris.
Shortly after her arrival in the San Francisco where her songs and guitar echoed in the underground. Bay Area, she teamed up with Dorothy Fadiman and composed music for a string of Ms. Fadiman's award winning films. As both composer, singer/songwriter and citizen of the world, Erika has been honored in various capacities, most recently as Female Artist of the Year by the world's largest independent music organization (Just Plain Folks) and as one of the 100 Most Outstanding Women of the Year (along with Queen Elizabeth, Oprah Winfrey and Justice Sandra Day O'Connor) by Modern Woman Today Magazine.
ERIKA leapt into the world of solo singer/songwriters in 1999 and has since established her presence across the country, releasing three albums which have earned awards and wide spread accolade. In her most recent recording, The New Orleans Sessions (2002), she pared down to just her voice and guitar revealing a unique style that includes a percussive and harmonically rich approach. The instrument becomes her orchestra by complementing the emotional intimacy of her voice and the strength of her songs.
Whether singing in English, Spanish, French or Portuguese, Erika Luckett reminds us that beauty and a luminous heart transcend any boundary.
ERIKA appears in Topeka after a recent performance tour in Italy.
