Beauchamp’s to Feature Robert Sudlow; 60 Years of Art
It’s a huge understatement to say that “a lot has happened since 1947”. 60 years ago, Americans had never heard of microwave ovens, cell phones or DVDs.
There was no space shuttle, no internet, no contact lenses, no laser surgery and no interstate highway. Heck, there wasn’t even Rock & Roll.
But in 1947, a young teaching assistant at the University of Kansas was honing his skills as a painter. Only a few years removed from a stint as a WWII Navy pilot, Robert Sudlow was just starting to believe that he might actually be able to make a living doing what he loved best- making art. And that’s exactly what he’s been doing for the last 60 years.
Though he would eventually gain significant recognition and respect as one of the premier painters of the American heartland, Sudlow’s paintings have always encompassed more than prairie landscapes. This year’s annual Sudlow show at Beauchamp’s Gallery offers a range of Sudlow’s work over the past 60 years.
To be sure, the show includes mostly the impressionist landscapes for which Sudlow is best known. But there are also a number of older artworks that will surprise many admirers of the artist’s work. Some of the earlier paintings carry the obvious influence of Sudlow’s mentor Albert Bloch. There’s a wonderful California cityscape, several portraits, and a dark ominous painting from 1947. And though Sudlow hasn’t produced a lithograph in over 10 years, this year’s show presents a
half dozen of the popular prints.
The show opens with a public reception for the artist at Beauchamp’s Gallery on Friday, November 2nd, 6-8 PM. The paintings and prints will be on display through December.
