YWCA holiday store provides hope and gifts for families

Because domestic and sexual violence do not cease for the holiday season, the YWCA Battered Women Task Force is turning to the community to fill both its holiday store and hearts full of hope.

For the past four years, the YWCA BWTF has hosted a holiday store for victims of domestic and sexual violence.  Individuals utilizing the organization’s services visit the store to gather gifts for their children.  Children also have an opportunity to pick out something special for their mothers.

Children are especially impacted when home violence erupts; particularly when it results in a break from routine or an alternate living arrangement.

“When women make tough choices to leave violent situations for their own and their family’s safety, a financial crisis often follows,” said Eileen Doran, BWTF director.  “Through community donations to the BWTF Holiday Store, we can help parents keep both the holiday spirit and hope alive.”

In 2006, the BWTF Holiday Store reached a new height of donations and was able to provide gifts to over 140 people in need.  This year, staff aims to touch more lives through the spirit of giving.

Community members with children of their own are encouraged to have their children help pick out gifts.  Children know what’s hot in the market place and by shopping with them; parents can utilize the opportunity to open communication about sensitive topics.

“For parents, it's a good idea to take this time and talk to children about why you’ve decided to donate,” said Laura Burton, YWCA Public Education Coordinator, “Kids come to the YWCA BWTF shelter because they’re not safe at home. They may have to leave their toys and games behind.  It’s a good opportunity to talk openly with your kids about peace and what it means to have peace at home.”

Another option businesses might choose is for employees to donate to the BWTF Holiday Store versus the typical gift exchange.  It can provide employees a sense of unity by giving to a noble cause and deviates from the traditional plan to something more community-focused.

Items requested for the BWTF Holiday store are included.  Items can be dropped off at the YWCA at 225 SW 12th Street during regular business hours.  Large donations can be picked up by calling 785.354.7927.
