Cell Phones for WTCS

Students at The University of Kansas’ School of Social Welfare will be collecting cell phones and cell phone chargers from December 19, 2007 until January 24, 2008 for Women’s Transitional Care Services (WTCS). Purple drop boxes will be stationed at various locations throughout the Lawrence, Topeka, Ottawa and Kansas City areas. WTCS provides emergency shelter and services for victims of domestic violence. The phones collected will be donated to WTCS’ Dial for Help program. These phones provide an untraceable emergency phone for local survivors of domestic violence.
-Please see below for information on WTCS and the Dial for Help program
-See Pg. 2 for drop-off locations.

WTCS Information:
MISSION
Women's Transitional Care Services, Inc., works toward peace in the world by elimination of violence in our communities. Therefore, we are dedicated to the empowerment of women and children; the creation of peaceful, safe space; the promotion of equality and respect for all people; the appreciation of differences; and the social action necessary to achieve these goals.

WTCS offers free cellular phones to domestic violence survivors as a way for them to contact the police in the event of an emergency.

Because of the often unpredictable behavior of batterers, these phones have the potential to serve as a lifeline in frightening or dangerous situations. Cell phones given from WTCS through the Dial for Help program are capable of contacting 911 as all cell phones are required by law to do even without a calling plan. By having these phones, domestic violence survivors take an additional step in keeping themselves safe and being prepared in the event of an emergency. Survivors of domestic violence who feel that they continue or may continue to be endangered are encouraged to call WTCS and ask about the Dial for Help phones. Any survivor in the WTCS service area may receive a Dial for Help cell phone through WTCS.
